Juneteenth is a holiday commemorating the emancipation of the remaining enslaved African-Americans in Galveston, TX. It is also called Emancipation Day or Juneteenth Independence Day. The name “Juneteenth” references the date by combining the words “June” and “nineteenth,” as the traditional date, which is now a federal holiday in the United States, recognized on June 19th.
