Wooden Puzzles with Terra Rodgers - Eventeny
Wooden Puzzles with Terra Rodgers
Starts on Saturday, April 13th, 2024
Northport, Alabama, United States
About the event
Explore the variety of hand cut wooden puzzles and learn to cut your own puzzle on a scroll saw. Students will be paired two per saw (maximum 6 students) for a 4 hour class. During the first part of the class, they will work at the saws together, alternating to work on different basic skills. For the last ⅔ of the class, they will take longer turns as they work on the two projects. While not using the saw, they will be able to learn from a selection of puzzles cut between 1860 and present that demonstrate a variety of different cutting styles. They will cut two small puzzles- one an interlocking, ribbon cut children’s puzzle and the other a random cut adult puzzle. The focus will be on giving students as much time as possible at the saws and exploring design. The instructor will discuss the details of which saw, materials, etc are best individually after the class if someone wants to explore wooden puzzles further. All supplies included, but participants will need to pay the instructor a $5 materials fee at the beginning of the class. No experience with any tools or woodworking needed. Safety: tie your hair back and don’t wear dangling bracelets or necklaces. Wear comfortable shoes for standing. If you are unable to stand for an hour at a time, please contact mbell@kentuck.org to discuss accommodations. This class is for participants ages 18+, and participants should follow all safety guidelines. This class has a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 6. If the minimum is not met, participants will be refunded. This workshop is non-refundable after the registration deadline passes. Please email Mary Bell, Program Director, at mbell@kentuck.org with any questions. About Terra Rodgers: "I grew up on the edge of the Appalachian Mountains in Greenville, SC. My dad’s parents lived in a cabin on a small lake, surrounded by mountains. My grandmother & I would walk in the woods, & she’d teach me the names of the plants. Then when it got too hot, we’d lay on inner tubes in the lake & look up at the quiet, cool hemlock trees. She, & many other relatives, are artists which means that I grew up doing art & making things. I drew, painted, took art classes and have continued ever since. More recently, I have begun working with wood. Growing up in the town where my family has lived for almost 250 years, I listened to my parents’ & grandparents’ stories about what the land used to look like & developed a strong sense of place and protection of the land. All of my work stems from this. Whether it is bringing attention to unseen flora & fauna or sustainably harvesting native wood to carve into spoons, my work reflects environmental concerns. I also reuse & repurpose materials in my work that I have recycled. This is my life and my work. I hope you enjoy it." Made possible in part by grants from Alabama State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
