About the event

The Joplin Empire Market and the Downtown Joplin Alliance will be hosting the 6th Annual Empire Market Chili Cookoff at the Market on January 18, 2025! Awards will be given for 1st place, 2nd place and 3rd place, as well as People's Choice. Judging begins at 10:00am and public tasting is from 10:30am-2pm (or when the chili runs out!). Hear what the judges have to say and then cast your vote for whose chili is best in the People’s Choice Award! Admission into the tasting hall will be $5 - this grants access to taste all chili and vote in the People's Choice. You can prepay or buy a tasting ticket at the door. All proceeds will support the Newton Community Kitchen!

About the application

We are in need of several volunteers to help us make sure that Chili Cook-Off runs smoothly for contestants and attendees. We are looking for 2 people to run the chili sampling ticket counter, selling tickets and assisting guests with chili fixin's. We are also looking for 2 people to help at our Info Desk, a floater to assist where ever needed throughout the day and a few people to help us clean-up after the event is over. This is one of the market's busiest and most loved events...which means it's a ton of fun to be apart of!

We are looking for one person to provide general event support wherever needed throughout the Chili Cook-Off event. This could be anything from helping with greeting guests, assisting at the ticket counter, helping run chili to the guest judges and helping to keep the cafe tables clean.

We are need of two people to run the Info Desk during Chili Cook-Off. Volunteers answer general market questions, assist with the purchase of SNAP and market tokens, as well as handle all market merch sales.

Shift goes from 9:30am until the chili runs (or 2pm, whichever comes first) We are in need of two people to help man the ticket counter; selling tickets to sample the chili, as well as assisting guests with chili fixin's, plates, silverware and napkins.
