Experience the Birds of Northwest Indiana
Join us on our first ever Rainbow Birders on the Road Trip! We will embark on a fun weekend of birding in two of Indiana’s best birding areas: the Indiana Dunes and Celery Bog! Our mid-September trip is timed to take full advantage of the fall migration as well as the many resident birds. Birds that have spent the summer nesting in the north migrate south along the shores of Lake Michigan and find the well-situated Indiana Dunes a great stop-over spot! Each day will begin with a daily briefing to discuss our plans and the birds that we may see. In the evening, we will gather to review our trip bird list and revel in the wonderful birds that we saw! Within a few days of the conclusion of our trip, a full list of our bird observations will be provided. We will share our formal eBird trip report for those participants who use eBird to document their birding experiences.

Destination Information
We plan to visit the top birding areas in both the State and National Indiana Dunes Parks, and maybe a few outside of the parks. While our itinerary is subject to change based on weather and bird conditions as we get closer to the trip, some of the areas we may visit are Cowles Bog, the Great Marsh, Beverly Shores, Miller Trail, the Observation Tower, and perhaps even Michigan City Harbor. We will spend all day Saturday as well as Sunday morning in the Indiana Dunes area. A stop at Celery Bog Nature Area in West Lafayette will provide us with a nice birding break on our Sunday return trip. Note, the Indiana Dunes are in the Central Time Zone so some of the times listed in the Eventeny itinerary are misleading (it is based upon the Eastern Time Zone). You will receive information with the correct local times.

Cost Information
This trip is designed to minimize costs and maximize great birding. We will carpool and caravan in several vehicles, with the expectation of splitting gas costs. You will bring your own lunch for Saturday and Sunday (we will provide a cooler), make and pay for your own reservations at the designated trip hotel, and pay for your own Saturday night dinner. We will be getting up early (6:00 or 6:30 am?), have at least one late night, and be spending a fair amount of time in the vehicles. Comfort stops will be provided at reasonable intervals. An early breakfast (included in the hotel cost) will start our Saturday and Sunday, and will also provide a good opportunity for our daily briefing and to answer any questions. We will enjoy our picnic lunches in the field.
