Visual Voices #2

This is one of a series of artwork created with a family’s keepsakes to share and preserve their her-stories and, by sharing, encourage understanding and appreciation of each other’s stories. The paper was created with handkerchiefs passed down from generations. Keepsakes, each with a story to tell; buttons saved from relatives’ clothes, flowers from propagated plants passed around the family, treasured trinkets and even a frame that once hung in a relative’s home, come together to create a narrative of a beautiful and complex story - a tangible story that is very personal and unique expressing a heritage and culture but at the same time, universal. While we all don’t walk the same paths, these works voice the path of a person who belongs to a family who belong to a community and to a race with hope they bring understanding to others and voice differences and similarities we face during these times and encourage racial understanding through shared stories.
