Through Passage
I'm not usually drawn to guided tours while travelling, preferring instead to wander at my own pace through whatever new landscape I am able to explore. But this time, in the fjord like Western Brook Pond in Newfoundland, my only access to the canyon in the distance was to jump on the boat full of tourists like me. In only a few moments on the water, all eyes were searching the scene before us and the chatter of embarking settled into whispers of awe. Each turn revealed another incredible rock face, alternately in deep shadow or glinting with sunlight. We strained to look around the next corner and craned our necks to consume the views straight up from the water's edge. The rocks told ancient stories and we eagerly immersed ourselves in the passage back in time that this little voyage provided.
This paper collage piece is made from my own handprinted papers, layers of texture and colour create an impressionistic landscape.

About Barbara Buntin
I make paper collage art pieces in my studio in Cobourg ON, drawing inspiration from multiple sources. Just as collage is an assemblage of materials to form a unique composition, the layered influences on my creative life bring me to this point in my art making.
Working with my hand printed paper, I cut and move shapes around the piece until the elements create a pathway for the eye, a place for the imagination to dwell. The shapes, colours and movement in the materials seem animated while I construct the scene, resulting in compositions that echo human energy and interactions. Some compositions remain in abstract form, hinting at unseen forces in transition; while the landscape images reflect the memory and atmosphere of place rather than a descriptive representation.
I enjoy the opportunity to exhibit my work in Galleries and Art Shows both locally and in Toronto as well as welcoming visitors to my studio by appointment. The conversations that arise with the viewer are a sustaining part of the process of making art.
