The Jobs of Yesteryear series combines history and surrealism to tell the stories of obsolete jobs. A contemporary glimpse into the past, these mixed media paintings serve as a reminder of time and stories long forgotten.
This particular Job of Yesteryear mixed media painting features a frontiersman. The colonists that expanded westward into the wild unknown territory of the American frontier have become an iconic part of our collective history. There are many perspectives from which to view their pursuits, from the point of view of the Native American tribes already lving there to the rugged men and women who cast off into the unknown, trusting that something better lay beyond the horizon. The Frontiersman in my painting takes a moment to drink in the incredible vistas that I’m sure those early inhabitants beheld as a wagon train makes its way through the valley below, a sign of increased settlement and the official end of the frontier in the early 1900s.
The Frontiersman was created using acrylic and watercolor paint. The long-limbed character was crafted using watercolor paper and pasted on the wood panel. See an illustrated guide of my process here.
The Jobs of Yesteryear are thought-provoking conversation pieces that will bring an air of history and whimsy to any room.
