Lifeguard tower 16 is located at the south end of San Elijo State Beach in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California. While capturing some towers at this beach in the morning during rush hour (check out the traffic on the CA-101 in the background), this surfer came out of the water and gave me the opportunity to compose this juxtaposition of him and the tower. This is the photo that is on the cover of my book with all my Encinitas images.
This is a limited edition piece, as I'm only doing 20 pieces at this size. This is number 7.
The technique is from the early days of b&w photography also known as hand tinting. This is a chemically developed photo that I hand colored with translucent oil paint.
The photo itself measures 24x12 inches and is framed in a rustic reclaimed wood frame. A textured gel coating is applied to the front (no glass). Wire on the back for easy hanging.
A certificate of authenticity is attached to the back.

In my 2D mixed media work I enjoy conveying a story of a place with a history. I love bold textures as these are created by passing time, therefore putting emphasis on bygone days. In particular, I aim to show the beauty that exists in human-made wooden, concrete and steel structures contrasting with soft organic forms from nature. My favorite subjects are industrial objects, ghost towns and coastal themes with an element of human origin in it. To obtain my goal I portray these by high-contrast black and white photographs and hand color the photographs with either oils, acrylics or pastels. My frames have a relation with the subject matter, such that the final product is an integrated whole.
