Orbea variegata, previously known as Stapelia variegata, is a well-known succulent that typically forms a dense mat with 4-angled stems covered in purplish-brown markings. These decumbent stems grow up to 10 inches (25 cm) in length and 4 inches (1 cm) in diameter, not including the tooth-like protrusions.
The color of the flowers can vary greatly, often showing speckles of purple-brown on a light yellow base. These star-shaped flowers can reach up to 3.2 inches (8 cm) in diameter and bloom in late summer or autumn. They produce a mild rotting scent to attract insects for pollination. The seed pods, resembling two horns, can grow up to 5 inches (12.5 cm) in length.
