Originally from the southwestern region of the French Alps, 'Royanum' (Sempervivum tectorum) is a noteworthy variety. Its large, open rosette, robust stolons, and prolific production of offsets make it a standout in any planting. Its smooth leaves are sometimes marked with "watermarks", or wavy lines, created by a layer of wax that helps the plant tolerate extended droughts. The apple green leaves with reddish purple tips add a striking contrast to any garden. While Sempervivum primarily grows during spring and summer, it can thrive with weekly watering and afternoon shade in temperatures over 80F. This frost-hardy plant can survive winter under a blanket of snow, but it is important to protect it from heavy rain and standing water to prevent rot.
