MEET THE ARTIST: Sandy McMullen
Sandy divides her time between Winters in the Comox Valley on Vancouver Island and Summers in the Kawarthas – Ontario Canada: two diverse landscapes – culturally, politically and physically.
She has been painting since 1989. Her love of colour, texture and line has remained consistent over the years even as her style and media has evolved from landscapes and florals in watercolour to non-objective work in acrylic.
Sandy is a life-long student starting with years of art courses at the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Toronto School of Art and summers at the Haliburton School of Art and Design - all schools where the classes were taught by working artists. Harold Klunder and Casey McGlynn, artists with authentic and unique voices, stand out as inspirational teachers. Recently the “stay-at-home times” of 2020 brought Sandy into the world of on-line learning and on-line community through immersion in the Art2Life Academy with Nicholas Wilton.
When Toronto’s funky new Distillery District opened she was a partner in founding the RedEye Gallery. This meant regular years of immediate feedback from the public. During this time Sandy was also artist in residence at Context Consulting and in her own solo-practice as a personality assessment practitioner, bringing creativity and artistic expression to leadership and personal development for executives and teams. Art is a great teacher. As with any art form you get to dig deep into who you are and what is important for you to express.
Process and presence as vehicles for self-discovery are central themes in Sandy’s work: reaching for what is true to one’s core and ultimately for a state of flow, of letting go of the tyranny of thought and just being in the moment with paint and canvas. Trusting the process and embracing play are key to her work. The end result are paintings that lean toward the joy of embracing life.
