This remarkable Nautilus Pendant features a full pyritized ammonite fossil set with a 6mm Fire Citrine. Alisha hand picks each fossilized ammonite and finding a specimen of this quality is rare. This particular piece measures 2 1/2" diagonally from the bail to the tip of the tentacles. The Nautilus is cast in solid sterling silver and is drilled and pegged securely into the pyritized ammonite shell. Each specimen has its unique characteristics and time worn imperfections. (You would too if you were 65 - 300 million years old.) Included in the price is a heavy 18" sterling silver anchor chain. What is an Ammonite? Although it is easy to imagine that today's Nautilus descended from the Ammonite, the extinct marine Ammonite was more closely related to the octopus, squid and cuttlefish then the nautilus. Ammonites belonged to the class Cephalopoda and first appeared during the Devonian age. Their spiral shape shells are beautiful and the species evolved over millenniums. Depending on ocean sediments and aquatic chemistry the fossilization process creates varied results. There are Ammonites with intricate jade patters; opalized, spiky, rainbow, red flash and pyritized Ammonites.
