MEET THE ARTIST: Karen Hasegawa
Karen Hasegawa, born in Calgary, Alberta, has lived and travelled through Asia and currently resides in Comox, BC. She studied art at UBC and Emily Carr Institute and has had careers as both a teacher and a graphic designer. She is passionate about photography, gardening and
creating her own works of art.
"I find myself drawn to the smallest details in nature – the tightly wound curl of a new fern frond, the gold and green glints of a tree frog, how birds interact and fight for a prime spot on the feeder. What I aim to capture, with both my photography, and my art, are precious small moments that may otherwise be missed during the craziness of life that we all are living. It is my attempt to slow things down; to take time to feel the beauty all around us that is easily overlooked. When something I have created makes others stop, pause and take a moment to share my vision, I feel a surge of joy. Currently, I use silk dyes, silk paint, batik and resists, creating paintings, scarves and more."
