A modern pandemic swept over 2020, and many of us have sought ways exorcise our anxieties. This piece was a fitting way to illustrate our fears of uncertainty, while cloaking it in a more fantastical expression. Plague doctors were actual figures in the history of plagues that have since evolved into folklore. Their classic costuming with the bird-like mask and waxed robes began in the 1600's in Europe, which featured a number of ways to ward off disease. One notable concept was the idea of 'miasma', the bad air that was believed to spread diseases. The beak-like mask would have held herbs and spices, which was used to ward off the evil air.
