Description

N469. Atomic Barkcloth Enamel & Copper Necklace. I made the pendant with copper wire & enamel in a design based on 1960s atomic barkcloth. Original barkcloth was made from the fibrous inner tree bark; modern barkcloth is usually made of cotton, with texture similar to tree bark. Barkcloth was popular in the 1940s – 1960s, & used for curtains & upholstery. Common patterns included large tropical flowers & leaves, & images of atoms & boomerang shapes. The chain is copper cable, with a spaceman at back. The necklace is 21” around, but can be worn shorter; the pendant measures 2” x 1.25”.

Meet your seller

Pauline's Jewelry Box

My jewelry reflects my passion for antiquing & recycling. I love working with early plastics (e.g., bakelite), found objects (e.g., vintage pinback buttons, lithograph tin, old bottle tops, transit tokens, electrical resisters, etc.), broken vintage jewelry & charms, metal (especially copper), & gemstone beads to create something fun & interesting to wear. I use a variety of techniques in my work, including cold connections, texturing, soldering, riveting, wire-wrapping, enameling, & forming. I take jewelry classes at the Des Moines Art Center, & enjoy learning & experimenting with new techniques. Each piece of jewelry I design is unique, & comes with a story that describes the history of the materials used &/or the message/meaning of the work.
