Home-distilled moonshine was common in rural area of Virginia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee. Poorly produced moonshine can be contaminated, mainly from materials used in the construction of the still. Using these methods often resulted in blindness or lead poisoning in those who consumed tainted liquor. By the end of Prohibition, the Prohibition Bureau was seizing nearly a quarter-million illegal stills each year.
