Known for its dichotomous branching, uncommon in cacti, this species of Mammillaria is easily recognizable by its unique spines, which resemble an owl's eyes. Commonly referred to as owl eye pincushion, owl eyes, owl's eye, cactus parkinsonii, or Nemammillaria parkinsonii, this particular Mammillaria has the distinct feature of alternating heads, starting with one and progressing to two, then three, and so on. Due to restricted growth and habitat loss, this mammillaria cactus is now endangered in its native Mexico. Its multiple mounds are typically blue-green, with clusters of tubercles forming ridges along its spherical or cylindrical stem. White or yellowish spines are arranged radially around the tubercles, with longer and thicker central spines that truly stand out as "eyes" of an owl.
