Gazing out from the shadows, this male mandrill displays his magnificent and colorful facial markings.
Scratchboard is a relatively unknown medium, although it has been around since the 19th century. A kaolin clay tablet is coated with black India ink, and the artist etches into it with a variety of sharp tools to reveal their design. The revealed clay etching can be left white or further tinted with colored inks or watercolor paints.
This artwork measures 5" x 7", and includes a solid wood floater frame in a black satin finish which has an outside dimension of 9.125" x 7.125" x .75". Artwork is signed on the front with the artist's pen name; on the reverse, it is titled and signed with the artist's full name. The piece has been varnished with a matte finish, and is best displayed without glazing/glass.
