Long-eared Owl

The owl may not be as attractive as his counterparts of the species, but he is a slender owl with long, close set ear tuffs that generally point straight up and a boldly streaked chest. He stays away from the southern states but includes Canada in his range. He lives in thick woods, sometimes in groups of a dozen or more roosting together in groves of conifers, willows and other trees. He hunts at night over open fields and marshes. He is silent except in breeding season when he lets out one or more long hooo notes. He builds no nest but uses abandoned nests built by other birds, such as crows, ravens and various hawks.
