To some, Lilith is a demon--Adam's first wife who was created as his equal from the earth and then banished by God because she would not submit to her husband. She has been blamed for tempting men, murdering children, and James Joyce called her the "Patron of Abortions." Ancient societies knew her as a dark, sex-crazed spirit, a vampire and the mother of hundred of demons, while Pagans and modern-day feminists see her as a symbol of freedom and feminine strength, our true mother, the tree of life, a woman rooted in both the heavens and the Earth.
In this beautiful depiction by California artist R. Noelle, Lilith is both a goddess and a demon, frightened and frightening, a girl, a woman, an eternal being, sweeping up the earth as she expands into the night sky.

A California native, Rebecca’s artistic inspiration comes from her love of homeland and nature. Trained as a plein air painter, Rebecca spends much of her time painting outdoors on location. The gardens, landscapes and architecture of San Diego and of the places she travels offer endless opportunities to capture the beauty and emotion of life. Painting mostly in oils, she works in both brush and palette knife, as each tool creates a strikingly different effect.
