MEET THE ARTIST: Kathleen Schmalz
I have been creating art work for many years. The simple pleasures of paint, both oil and acrylic, are my go-to mediums and I have come back to landscape again and again in various forms. I have been fortunate to live in Vancouver, Banff, Waterton Lakes, Cranbrook, Edmonton, Guelph and now in Sooke. B.C., and each landscape has educated my ways of seeing. I was always more interested in painting a community of living and purposeful change than a single building. Plein air painting is a big part of my process.
My interest in change over time led me to curate 4 major public gallery exhibitions, and to completing my Doctorate in Visual and Performing Arts through Charles Sturt University. I currently teach part time in Art Education at the University of Victoria.
My paintings have been described as ‘Unsentimental Canadiana’ for the connection to landscape traditions of the past but with a twist towards the raw, patterned, and the use of imagined colour.
