This mixed-media painting was inspired by my many walks on the shores of Lake Superior in the Upper Peninsula of Northern Michigan. Looking down at the beach, driftwood, sticks, fall leaves, a piece of birch bark, as well as a pine needles and a cone are just some of the treasures that are visible - others are nearly buried under the sand.
Powdered charcoal was sprinkled on the watercolor paper with varying density. Water was sprayed, painted and squirted, and then guided to establish textures, shapes and a flow in the painting. Watercolors not only added color and more texture but also helped define the forms. The piece is triple-matted with a slightly rustic oak frame. Conservation glass and mounting was used.
