Hand carved, hand painted, hand built, ceramic platter with a Skimmer diving for his dinner Approx. 15" X 7" X 1.25 at handles Plates are challenging. They take up a lot of space in the kiln and sometimes warp. There might be some wonkiness to add to the charm but if the wonkiness is extreme, a hammer is taken to the plate. This challenge dictates the higher pricing on handmade dinnerware. I create each piece by hand, step-by-step, from white stoneware. Slabs are rolled flat and then pressed over a form to give the shape. A coil is rolled & added to the bottom. Before firing, I coated the center with black and sketched out the scene, then added red to the chairs and wine glass and defined the lines by carving and removing much of the black in the sand and sky areas. The piece is then fired once to drive out impurities, then glazed and fired to 2185 degrees in my electric kiln, at my San Diego home studio.
