Hamed Ouattara

Artist Biography: As a self-taught visual artist, my work spans a broad spectrum of mediums and artistic forms, including drawing, painting, sculpture, and installation. My creative journey defies traditional boundaries, blending various disciplines to explore humanity's connection to the cosmos and the profound meaning of our existence. My artworks are a tapestry of diverse materials, ranging from acrylic and pastel to unconventional substances like cola juice, natural pigments, and reclaimed elements such as leather. This eclectic mix reflects a commitment to sustainability and the innovative use of everyday materials, resonating with contemporary themes of ecological awareness and upcycling in art. Each piece I create is infused with a mystical and animistic essence, portraying human and animal silhouettes within intangible realms. I harness the prophylactic and therapeutic power of writing by embedding sacred letters and numbers into my compositions. This method not only pays homage to my cultural heritage but also creates a spiritual dialogue, merging art with a deeper metaphysical purpose. My approach is both an exploration of spirituality and a form of cultural resistance, offering viewers not just aesthetic pleasure but also a profound commentary on our collective existence. In response to the sociopolitical challenges of my homeland, such as the security crisis in Burkina Faso, I have embarked on artistic initiatives that advocate for collective resilience and heroism. This includes creating three-dimensional armor-like sculptures and canvases embedded with protective symbols, designed to inspire and protect through art. These works serve as a bridge between contemporary artistic practices and African cultural traditions, fostering a dialogue that is both visually captivating and socially relevant. By addressing themes of resilience, protection, and cultural identity, my art invites viewers to reflect on their place in a world marked by both beauty and struggle. Through my work, I aim to connect global audiences with the rich, often underrepresented narratives of African culture, encouraging a broader understanding and appreciation of its profound artistic and spiritual contributions.
