“Hope is the only bee that makes honey without flowers.” - Robert Green Ingersoll
I started creating “Evolet” back in 2018 after Lucien had been diagnosed with epilepsy. That piece was supposed to be part of a show with the Strange Dreams Collective, and it was almost a visual prayer for his health. But, everything I was feeling at the time was too raw, and it wasn’t the right painting for me to create back then. I ended up creating “Omniscience” instead, which took a lot of the same emotions from a more distanced perspective. My husband never let me forget about “Evolet”, however, and kept asking about it even when I wasn’t working on it. The questioning eventually became, “when are you going to finish *my* jellyfish piece?”
2020 taught me a huge number of things about life in general, and many detailed things about my life, the kind of life i want to have with my family, and what I want for Lucien as well. Toward the end of 2020, I also found myself pregnant with Lucien’s sister, Juniper. I spent a lot of time reflecting on Lucien’s infancy, and fervently hoping I can be as tenacious for her as I was for him should we discover they have health complications in common. I also found myself shrouded in peace, whereas before, I felt more like I was drowning. The emotions were familiar, but this time, more than anything else, I reveled in hope and knew I could make “Evolet” be what I wanted it to be back then.
Evolet means, “the promise of life.”
