For over twenty-five years, woodworking was a hobby. Making furniture and gifts for family and friends. In 2007, I bought a lathe to make tables legs for a table I was making at the time and working with the lathe became something I really enjoyed. Since then, I have focused on making functional art; salt and pepper mills, vases, Christmas ornaments, salt and pepper shakers, spice shakers, pens, bowls. Each piece of wood has its own personality and presence that I wanted to bring to the forefront. Frequently, people will use every day functional items without regard to their appearance. Creating functional art brings some beauty through wood while providing a wanted service. This brings warmth to places often viewed as utilitarian and sterile. Recently, I have been focusing on wood that is considered blemished or defective. Especially spalted woods that are partially deteriorated. They have unique lines and character. Saving the wood and emphasizing their special lines and markings gives a unique beauty that cannot be fabricated.
