Cotyledon Flanaganii ssp. mzimvubuensis: This particular product is an evergreen succulent shrub, with branches that can reach a height of 200-400 mm (not including the inflorescence). The branches themselves are 6-8 mm in diameter and are green in color, with the lower branches being broader and featuring smooth brownish bark that becomes more woody with age. Nodes are spaced 2-3 mm apart, but can reach up to 15 mm when grown in the shade. Leaves are densely clustered at the end of each branch, with a spiral arrangement and a subterete base that becomes dorsiventrally compressed towards the apex. They typically measure 70-80 x 8-10 mm (with a maximum width of 18 mm at the tip), and are linear-spathulate in shape with a green surface. The margin of the apical portion is reddish and cartilaginous, and the apex is subacute to subtruncate, with a small mucronate.
The main differences between ssp. mzimvubuensis and ssp. flanaganii are seen in the leaves, which are distinctly spathulate with a red margined, mucronate tip (rather than pointed). Additionally, the leaves are sparsely covered in glandular hairs and the corolla measures 30 x 8 mm. These leaves bear some similarity to those of the yellow-flowering C. campanulata found in the south-western region of the Eastern Cape.
