Description
Sgraffito carved wall tiles - these carved art tiles featuring desert birds make a great gift. Phainopepla is only one left.
The framed tiles are just 7.5" square, so you could add interest to a small wall or create a grouping.
Each carved tile was handbuilt starting with a slab of clay cut to size (allowing for shrinkage to fit a 6" space). Once it had dried enough, I coated the entire surface with a black underglaze. Plus I added a touch of orange on the quail. I carved the design by scratching away the background and carving the details, This process is called sgraffito.
After glazing and firing, the tile was placed in a purchased black wooden frame and is ready to hang.
