Description

Limited edition (200) conservation quality print on watercolor paper. This member of the sunflower family is closely related to Balsamorhiza sagittata, the Arrow-leaf Balsamroot. The former is restricted to the west coast states and BC, whereas the range of the Arrow-leaf Balsmroot extends east to the Rocky Mountains. With flower heads up to about three inches in width, it is easy to see the ray flowers (which look like petals), and the many more orange-colored disk flowers, located in the center of the flower heads. Traditionally, the large rootstalks of Balsamroot have been used in healing, and essences made from this plant have been shown to increase immunity. Plants in the wild should be harvested only with great care and permission from the land owner or steward, so as not to deplete native plant populations. This painting was inspired by plants from the Siskiyou Mountains of southwestern Oregon.
