BACKSTREETS, though originally published as a YA book, nevertheless appeals to adult readers. Inspired by a tragedy in the author's own life, it centers around Kel, who wakes from a coma after a car crash to find that his lifelong friend Bryce is dead. Plagued by guilt, fear and a profound sense of loss, Kel has strange dreams and half-sees figures, and these make him doubt all he has been told. Bryce isn't dead, he decides. He's just lost. Kel begins searching the city, looking for Bryce and some sort of peace. As his obsession grows, Kel is drawn into the displaced world of the city's backstreets and finds his life spiralling out of control. BACKSTREETS is a deeply moving exploration of loss and grief. Note: the book is no longer available from the publisher. The author has copies, however. They are in good condition, but show signs of their age. Signed by author.
