When I come home with new gourds, I always cull through them and pull out the ones the look to me like birds. This is one of those gourds. Since it is a large gourd, I chose to cut it and make it a lidded vessel. An array of colored dyes and overlays of transparent iridescent paint sticks, along with copper patina fill this gourd’s surface. Patterns created by burning and carving are within each color area. Copper leafing is added throughout the gourd and copper patina areas are filled with filigree. And finally, the gourd stem is carved into the shape of a bird beak. The bird is then completed with embellishments of waxed linen thread, dried botanicals, and beads.
