On a table before you are a steel art form, a People magazine, and a wood toy top. Which one makes you smile, starts a conversation, cries out to be picked up? From tops to rolling pins to table top art bowls my pieces start conversations. Most of the wood used comes from trees on our property. Sometimes I make specific items like spoons in which case I look for the straightest grain lumber in apricot cut on our sawmill. In contrast, a spalted piece of maple with large inclusions may cry out to be made into a vessel or platter that highlights the unique beauty of the wood in hand. From there it's off to the band saw to shape the piece. In other words efficiently removing the excess. The rough wood is then secured to the lathe where the appropriate shape and embellishments are created. Non-food related art is soaked in Danish Oil to pop the grains and then several coats of lacquer are applied. Days later the pieces are buffed to a beautiful shine. If food related then food safe mineral oil is applied.
Using wood from trees on our property, pieces are created by either lathe or flatwork techniques. Inclusions of abalone or stone are added to enhance the designs, highlighting the natural wood grain & overall design. Art is finished in Danish oil & lacquer, food items are sealed with food safe oil
