Since I first discovered this unique, ancient, mystical and magical alphabet, it has fascinated me. It was preserved in a few ancient manuscripts and was first published in a scholarly journal in the 1980s where I came across it. The letters themselves seem to radiate power. It is this energy that excited me and convinced me that I had to create an artistic interpretation of these letterforms.
An Uplifting Song
I was thinking about how our rote recital of traditional prayers can make it difficult for us to concentrate on their meaning. I was thinking in particular about the Birkat HaMazon—the blessing after meals. Many of us know it by heart, and the familiar tunes draw us along joyfully but often without thinking about the significance of the text.
I had the idea of a making a Comic Book Bencher in which I could use bright, vivid images and lettering to slow the reader down and give graphic expression to the phrases and words of the prayers. In addition to the bencher, I designed this large, striking nine-color serigraphic print.
