Learn step by step how to create your very own painting of a bright sunflower in the style of J. Andre Smith who had his own approach to pointillism. As the founder of the A&H Andre used sunflowers in his art on campus.
1.Grab your A&H Art Kit.
2.Begin with the larger flat brush and blue acrylic paint. Fill in white canvas board with blue as a sky background. Wash brush (and do so between each color change)
3.Allow canvas board to dry well before next step
4. Paint white clouds on the top portion of canvas board (leaving room in center for sunflower)
5.With yellow paint, create 3 groups of sunflowers petals, one in the middle will be the largest with 2 groups of baby sunflower petals on each side
6.With green paint create stems and leaves for each sunflower
7. For brighter color go back over the yellow groups of sunflower petals with a second layer of paint
8. Switch to black paint and create the dark area for the sunflower seeds
9. Allow canvas board to dry well before next step
10. On the lid of each color, mix a small amount of the color with the white paint (blue and white, green and white, yellow and white, black and white)
11. Using the small paint brush or Q-tip use the lighter colors to add dimension and detail with "pointillism" dots. Start with the clouds and work your way to the sky, sunflowers, stems and seeds.
12.Let dry and you're all done with your Andre inspired sunflower!
The Art & History Museums – Maitland is home to five museums that foster an appreciation for art and history through immersive experiences, including exhibitions, events, artist residencies and education programs.
The A&H’s Maitland Art Center campus was founded as an artist colony in 1937 by visionary American artist and architect, Jules André Smith, and is the only National Historic Landmark in the four-county area of Central Florida. The Landmark status was awarded due to the Mayan Revival architecture — including 200+ murals & sculptures throughout the campus — and significance as a retreat for notable American artists.
Our five museums include: Maitland Art Center, Maitland Historical Museum and Telephone Museum on our main campus, and the Waterhouse Residence Museum and Carpentry Shop Museum on our Lake Lily campus.
