As the disease progresses, the hands become stiffer and the fingers eventually fuse. The victim notices that there are skull-like bone structures that develop. In most remote areas, the villagers consider that this is Death’s punishment for those who steal too often. Many times, a person afflicted with this disease will be imprisoned for thefts that they did not commit. During their stint in jail, the disease has progressed too far and no doctor is able to cure the victim. This reinforces the idea that it was Death’s decree and that no mortal can help the thief. After leaving prison, the thief is usually exiled and not allowed to take any of their belongings.
