Eco or botanical printing is a modern adaptation of an age old natural dye process. Also called bundling or contact printing, images are extracted from plants and transferred to fabric through a steaming process. When steamed, the chemicals held tightly within the cells of the plant are then released to imprint a likeness of the leaf. As the chemicals interact with different types of textiles, the intensity of the image emerges and forms a prototype. Time intensive as the processing of this unique art technique is, in itself it has low impact on the environment., thus the name eco-printing. A leaf, some fabric, a fallen branch, some meandering string and a bit of magic unite as a wand is waved and VOILA, Mother Nature has created an act of alchemy and the leaf has been transformed into a new form!
I have long adhered to a Japanese philosophy called Wasi Sabi, a deep wisdom which sees beauty in imperfection, appreciates simplicity and accepts change as a constant. As my artwork is handmade, each piece is unique. Hidden in each piece are color subtleties, permanent wrinkles, leaves with holes or branches missing a leaf, berries that project a 3D effect and surprises that only come through processing and a bit of alchemy. Bring the beauty indoors and enjoy it summer or winter. Mother Nature constantly has a surprise for us.
