Rachel Dory is an Austin, TX based fine artist known for her evocative, site-specific explorations of roadside America. "My paintings serve as windows to memories. They document Texas roadside locations that stop me in my tracks and compel me to turn around for another look. When I paint these locations I employ a multi-layered, sculptural approach as I seek answers to the questions the location asked when I visited in person. I build up and scrape away layers and elements until the painting achieves clarity. The unrooted yet soothing feeling of being "in between" is an important component to my work. I carry a sketchbook and camera with me at all times, so when I stumble across a site I can produce sketches and photographs to serve as references when I sit down in my studio to paint."
