Flowers are universal expressions of love, sorrow, celebration, and life's many milestones. We enjoy them for short periods in our home or in their natural world. They provide a calming effect in an often chaotic world. For many who view our work, seeing a particular flower prompts strong memories of past events and loved ones. Our art is directed toward giving a lasting way to enjoy those emotions and reliving important life experiences.
We are often asked if our floral subjects are "real". We base our art from our multiple exposure photographs, mostly executed in our studio. We have either found, grown, or purchased the flowers in our work. We use a process called light painting where LED flashlights are used to light the flowers in a darkened room from different directions, intensities, and durations with each exposure.
From there the final images are digitally manipulated to emphasize their unique characteristics. The final step is to apply digital brush strokes, which adds texture and context to the image. The final result is a digital image that captures the original beauty of the flower with our artistic interpretation of its unique characteristics.
